These past two weeks I have had dance practice Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for at least 2 hours. I have no past dance experience, so going into my first practice I was not familiar with any of the steps or body movements. Based on the way the classes are run I do not have someone working with me alone making it difficult to jump in once the music starts. I have to learn by replicating the dance steps and movements of my peers and teachers as the song plays. What I have learned to do is break down the moves step by step the first time around, and try to participate in the second set even if I make mistakes. Over the past two weeks I have gotten used to accepting my failures but it is something I need to work on moving forward because I do not have the speed, steps, moves, or coordination down yet. The first group I dance with is a group of 6-12 yr olds, which can be a very frustrating class because they are already so experienced and they know all the dance moves. I understand it is a slow process and not letting my frustration get the best of me will be key!
I am really enjoying the classes and staying positive because I have made some progress. I am getting close to perfecting the turns and the steps that go with in between turns, I am slowly becoming more comfortable with the arm movements, and I know a couple steps that just need to be executed a little faster. So far I feel very proud of myself but have decided to participate in the beginners class on Monday in order to hopefully get some more one on one time with the teachers. I will now be going to practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays and dancing with two different age groups.
